Embedding Sustainability to Product Vision
Nokian Panimo, Finland’s second-largest small brewery wanted to increase their sustainability understanding across their products and operations. The challenge was to screen the elements of sustainability in brewery products and the supply chain from ingredient sourcing to production and distribution.
Here’s how it unfolded
Framtid facilitated a project using futures thinking and sustainable development planning for Nokian Panimo’s leadership team. In the collaborative project, the team anticipated future sustainability trends and mapped these to the product creation and delivery. The project worked as an accelerator for spreading sustainability understanding in Nokian Panimo.
Methods used:
Foresight:
Sustainable Development:
Horizon Scanning: The team analyzed and prioritized key trends curated by Framtid’s foresight expert. Trends covered sustainability trends and regulation, customers and economy, and retail trends.
Trend mapping: Based on the Horizon scanning team mapped and prioritized the key trends that were relevant to products and business. This exercise revealed the key opportunities and low-hanging fruits in product sustainability.
Double materiality review: We wanted to understand how external development affects Nokian Panimo products and how Nokian Panimo products affect the world outside – both in positive and negative ways.
Vision Statement: At the end of the project we drafted product sustainability ambition and vision statements set in the future. These provided a collaborative understanding of the sustainability direction from the perspectives of sustainability in products, operations, and brand.
”For us the most important thing was, that now sustainability understanding is spread to the whole leadership team.”
– Janne Paavola, CEO, Nokian Panimo
The key findings and outcomes:
- Finding alternative routes for sustainability in products: In the project we drafted alternative ways for sustainability strategy development. These ways were reflected in the future and evaluated based on the long-term effects.
- Opportunities to clarify sustainability in brand and communications: The project revealed that Nokian Panimo had already done various sustainability activities in their operations and products. The visibility and communication of the actions still needed improvement to reach the customers and partners.
- Roadmap to enhance sustainability as a competitive advantage: Nokian Panimo is a remarkable player in the retail chain and is well aware of the regulatory environment. Being at the forefront of sustainability provides a competitive advantage and resilience to act in a changing environment.
